eventually is a part of the ongoing research that is specific to the relationship between myself and Marlie Couto.  Our practice and work together is based on what happens when communication moves beyond paying attention and nears mutual instinct.  This duet is fueled by the depth of our history and our shared interest in the rigor of movement research – we challenge each other in our vigor, tenderness, and detailed physicality.  Together we attempt to examine and organize our sense of care, effort, and levity.  The piece’s music is an original composition developed collaboratively with bassist and composer, Max Judelson.  eventually premiered at Chop Shop Contemporary Dance Festival in 2018 and since then has been performed at the Austin Dance Festival in 2019, and the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition in June 2018 where it received the 2nd place prize.

Research Residency

at Southern California Ballet

Researched by Marlie Couto and Courtney Mazeika

Music: original composition by Max Judelson

"Our artistic practice has grown to prioritize the research of how sensations, imagination, rigor, textures, effort, and sensitivity can manifest in dance.  Through continuous practice in improvisational research, ballet training, and choreographic study, we have found the study of dance to be an ever-changing and illuminating pursuit.  We are creatively motivated by the relationships between people – the shared and inherent human experiences that dance can delve into.  The foundation of care, thoroughness, and patience that we share in our processes is vital to the continued research of dance as a human-oriented art form.

Additionally, making dance with other commanding, powerful, young women at this moment feels important to our individual futures and our contributions to our shared and separate communities.  A statement of resilience itself and a recognition of the long journey ahead."
